Comment j’ai sauvé mon Annabelle…

Annabelle, ça faisait un an qu’elle dormait dans un sac en papier telle la Belle au Bois Dormant qui attendait son prince… Annabelle, c’était le premier patron acheté pour MOI et ce fut LE fiasco couture de l’année… On pouvait acheter le patron et le tissu séparément ou en kit, moi perso j’avais flashé sur le tissu Swoon d’Atelier Brunette et j’avais tout acheté avant la sortie du kit. Alors que s’est-il passé? Je pense que 2 éléments m’ont définitivement découragée: un zip mal posé et une encolure qui baillait grave. Il n’en fallait donc pas plus à la couturière novice que j’étais à l’époque pour jeter l’éponge (et mon Annabelle à moitié cousue dans un coin) en mode dé-gou-tée… (les 15€ de patron & les 20€ du mètre de tissu n’arrangeant rien à l’affaire). Niveau de couture 1/4 qu’ils disent sur la pochette… J’étais donc NULLE (ou niveau de couture 0/4…). S’en est suivi une petite phase de désespoir vite surmontée par un nouveau projet couture certainement pour mes serial princesses et Annabelle tomba dans un profond sommeil… jusqu’à ce week-end.

Annabelle had been a Sleeping Beauty for one year when her Prince (aka me) decided to wake her up… Annabelle was the first pattern I bought for myself and it was THE sewing failure of the year… You could buy the pattern and the fabric separately or together as a kit. Personally I fell in love with the Swoon fabric from Atelier Brunette and I had bought everything before they released the kit. So what happened? I think it was the combination of two problems: a wrongly stitched zipper & a too loose neckline. The sewing newbie I was back then didn’t need more to throw in the towel (and my half sewn Annabelle in a corner) feeling dis-gus-ted (the 15€ pattern & 20€ the meter fabric did not help…). Sewing level 1/4 they said on the packaging… I was therefore a CRAPY seamstress (or with a 0/4 sewing level). After a quick depressed feeling I pulled myself together and went back to sewing for my serial princesses I guess and Annabelle fell in deep sleep… until this week-end.

 

Je sors d’une looooongue période sans coudre (deux semaines. Oui pour moi c’est une éternité). Pourtant, j’ai une tonne de projets sur ma to do list mais je ne sais pas, je n’avais juste pas envie. Et puis je suis tombée sur Annabelle et là je devais finir quelque chose et ça m’a redonné l’envie. Histoire de repartir à zéro j’ai décousu la fermeture qui était mal posée, décousu la parementure (principal problème avec cette encolure qui baillait) et tout recousu. Pour le zip nickel mais ça baillait toujours… J’ai alors compris que ce modèle n’était peut-être pas fait pour mon corps en 8 athlétique (j’entends par là épaules carrées et non pas carrés de chocolat…)… J’ai alors fait ce que je n’aurais pas été capable de faire il y a un an: j’ai improvisé! Ci-dessous sur la première image on voit le bâillement et le surplus à enlever pour retendre le col et sur la seconde image l’endroit où j’ai coupé (sur le trait rouge). Bien sur vous devez ausi réduire la longueur de la parementure pour qu’elle soit de la même longueur que la nouvelle encolure. J’ai enlevé deux bons centimètres. Enfin sur la troisième image on voit le côté droit original et le côté gauche « réparé ».

Mending this dress put an end to a looooong sewless period (two weeks. Yes to me it felt like eternity). I do have a very long to do list however I just didn’t feel like sewing. And then I found Annabelle and it all came back to me. I decided to start again from the beginning and unsewed the zipper which was very badly stitched and I also unsewed the collar from its facing (witch was the main problem to me) and I sew it all back together. The zipper was ok but the neckline was still too loose… I then understood that this model was just not made for my athletic « 8 shaped » body (by athletic I mean wide shoulders, not abs…)… And so I did what I could not do one year ago: I improvised! Above on the first picture you can see the loose neckline and the part to take off to correct it. On the second picture you can see where I did cut the fabric after unsewing the facing (on the red line). Of course you also need to reduce the length of the facing so it matches the new length of the neckline. I took off two centimers (around one inch). On the third picture you can see on the right the original neckline and on the left the « mended » one.

Donc j’ai fini par en venir à bout de cette Annabelle un an après tout le monde! Lol! Avec le recul je pense que dèja je l’ai faite une taille trop petite. Et elle est très courte donc si c’était à refaire je rajouterais quelques centimètres en bas et je ferais un 42 au lieu d’un 40. C’est difficile pour moi de choisir la taille à faire car j’ai la poitrine dans une taille, la taille dans une autre et le bassin dans une troisième… une galère. Mais bon ce modèle doit blouser au dessus d’une ceinture donc ne pas hésiter à faire la taille la plus grande si vous hésitez. En conclusion si c’était à refaire je pense que je passerais mon tour car Annabelle n’est malheureusement pas faite pour ma morphologie! Par contre le tissu Swoon est vraiment super joli, je pense prendre le bleu une fois que j’aurais trouvé un patron pour aller avec! Moralité: Ne rien jeter, il y aura toujours un moment pour récupérer un ouvrage que vous pensez avoir raté. Et surtout ne pas avoir peur de prendre des initiatives pour adapter un patron à votre morphologie! A bientôt!

I finally made my Annabelle! One year after everyone else! Lol! Looking back I think I made it a size too small. And also I find it quite short so if I was to do it again I would add a few centimeters at the bottom and make a size 42 instead of a 40. It is always hard for me to chose which size to make as my breast are one size, my waist another and my hips a third one… hard decision. But this model needs some fabric to go over the belt so if you hesitate between two sizes chose the bigger. To conclude if I had a choice I wouldn’t do it again I think because it just doesn’t fit my body well! I do love the Swoon fabric from Atelier Brunette though, lovely! I might also purchase it in blue one I find a great pattern! Moral of this story: Never throw away a project you think you failed! The time to mend it will eventually come. And also trust yourself to take initiatives to modify a pattern and adapt it to your body! See you next time!

Marthe Ethnique!

Marthe c’est le prénom de mon arrière-grand-mère, la mère de Giselle pour ceux qui suivent! 😉 Donc forcément j’allais me pencher un jour ou l’autre sur cette jolie blouse… Et puis j’ai reçu dans une commande de The Sweet Mercerie un échantillon de cette popeline de coton à motifs éthniques et bam! Marthe, le patron culte de la République du Chiffon, s’est imposée toute seule!

Marthe is the first name of my great-grandmother, Giselle’s mother for those who follow me! 😉 So anyhow, I was going to make this lovely blouse someday… And then one day I received in my Sweet Mercerie parcel a sample of this beautiful ethnic cotton poplin and bam! Marthe, the it-pattern from the République du Chiffon, was on her way!

Alors Marthe tout le monde l’a faite (ou presque!). Donc j’avais une assez bonne vision de ce que je voulais et ce que je ne voulais pas. Je voulais cet effet asymétrique de profil, ces manches raglans & cette jolie basque. Je ne voulais pas la faire trop grande pour éviter un effet « montgolfière » qui vu ma carrure veut vite faire sac à patate! Et je ne voulais pas froncer car ma popeline, certe légère, n’est pas fluide. J’ai donc suivi l’exemple de MyDress-Made et j’ai fait des plis!

Every seamstress already has a Marthe in her closet so I had a pretty clear vision of what I wanted & what I did not want in mine. I wanted this asymetrical effect in profile, those raglan sleeves & the nice peplum. I did not want it to be too big to avoid looking like a hot-air balloon, which combined with my wide shoulders would quickly transform a lovely blouse into a potato bag… Also I did not want the peplum to be gathered, because even though it is a light poplin, it is not fluid. So I took inspiration from MyDress-Made and made pleats!

Au lieu de mon 40 ou 42 habituel j’ai fait Marthe en taille 38 et je ne regrette pas! Pour une blouse ample je la trouve très féminine et ajustée. J’ai surpiqué la marge de couture de la basque vers le haut pour bien la plaquer et que ça tombe niquel. J’ai fait la version la plus simple avec une simple couture au dos. Pas de fermeture éclair ni de bouton, on passe sans problème sa tête par l’encolure, et je fais 58 de tour de tête! Enfin, j’ai fait la finition du col avec un biais noir. Et voilà! C’est vraiment un basique très simple à faire pour les débutantes. Et vous? Comment est votre Marthe?!

Instead of my usual 40 or 42 I made Marthe in a size 38 and I did well! For a peplum blouse it stays very feminine & fitted. I topstitched the seam allowance of the peplum to keep it in place and make it fall perfectly. I made the simpliest version of Marthe with a simple seam in the back. No zipper nor button hole, you can easily put it on like a t-shirt, and I have a 58cm head circumference! Finally, I finished the collar with black bias binding. And ta daaa! It is truly a simple basic model easy for the beginning seamstresses. And you? How is your Marthe?!

Combi-short « Super-Melinda » de RDC!

Ma première réalisation d’un patron République du Chiffon! Je voulais absolument me faire une combi-short, au départ j’étais partie sur le patron « Kimono Sleeve Playsuit » de SALME mais je le trouvais assez simple et surtout pas assez « fitté » sur les réalisations des autres couturières. Et puis je suis tombée sur « Melinda »…

My first garment made of a Republique du Chiffon Pattern! I just wanted so badly to make myself a playsuit and at first I had chosen the SALME « Kimono Sleeve Playsuit » but I thought it was very simple and not fitted enough on what I saw from the other creations made on the net. And then I found « Melinda »… 

Ce que j’adore dans ce patron c’est le look vintage Pin’up et les possibilités infinies de déclinaison: On peut réaliser le combishort ou la robe et jouer avec les motifs sur les différents empiècements (épaules & ceinture). Pour la taille comme d’hab je suis entre deux… Cette fois j’ai choisi la plus petite et je loge pile poil dedans! Les explications sont très claires pour une couturière un peu expérimentée, à part les finitions de la doublure de la ceinture ou je n’ai pas tout compris mais bon ça n’a pas affecté le rendu 😉

    

What I love about this pattern is its Pin’up vintage look & the infinite possibilities to make it differently: You can either make the playsuit or the dress and play with the fabrics on the different pieces such as the front shoulders or the belt. Regarding the size, again I was in between two sizes and this time I chose the smallest one and I just fit in! The explanations are very clear for an advanced seemstress, except maybe the finish of the lining belt which I did not quite get but nevermind it did not affect the final garment 😉

Pour le tissu j’ai choisi mon coupon « Superman » acheté sur le salon « Pour l’amour du fil » à Nantes chez H&E Tissus! J’adore le motif avec les « S » rouges qui ressortent sur le reste en noir & blanc! Au lieu de faire des boutonnières sur les épaules j’ai mis les pressions Kam étoiles de mes filles 😉 Bref j’adore ma « supercombi » et je vais finir ce post avec une petite photo hommage à Clark Kent! Regarding the fabric I chose to use my « Superman » coupon bought on the « Pour l’amour du fil » exhibition in Nantes on the H&E Tissus booth! I love the details of this fabric with the red « S » which contrasts with the rest in black & white! Instead of buttonholes I put my daughters’ star shaped Kam press studs 😉 Anyway, I love my « superplaysuit » and I’ll end this post with an hommage picture to Clark Kent… See you soon!
